Having enjoyed the privileges of Christian Science for...
Having enjoyed the privileges of Christian Science for several years, I desire to express publicly what I have gained therefrom. My health in 1906 had given way completely. After having medical treatment for a number of months, this culminated in an operation which left me helpless and suffering, much worse than before. I did not know where to turn for relief, and wished for death, as I thought that was the only thing which would end it.
At this point Christian Science was presented to me, and after a few treatments I began to read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and soon became convinced of its truth, for as I read I gained courage and hope, and had a strong desire to get well and busy again. My help came slowly, and I was often beset by discouragement, but I knew the teaching was true, and Jesus said, "He that shall endure unto the end [of error], the same shall be saved." Severe headaches were the first to vanish, the nervousness and depression yielding later. I, however, rejoice greatly that the healing was not instantaneous, as I am losing sight of the physical in the wonderful transformation which is going on in consciousness, daily and hourly. Through Christian Science I have found satisfying work, fuller, richer friendships, a higher sense of beauty, and many spiritual joys in place of the material pleasures left behind, which once seemed so alluring and desirable.
I feel more grateful each day to our creator for His "wonderful works to the children of men," also to Mrs. Eddy, His messenger and standard-bearer, for her great love and self-sacrifice in blazing the trail for us to follow, and finally for the many channels—the churches, literature, reading-rooms, etc.—through which the light is shining upon all in such abundance. May it shine unto that perfect day when he shall reign "whose right it is," and when "death shall be swallowed up in victory." I am grateful beyond expression to be permitted to understand, even in a slight degree, the teaching of Christ Jesus as explained by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. To live in this great age is indeed a privilege and a blessing.
