It was nineteen years ago that I first attended a Christian Science...
It was nineteen years ago that I first attended a Christian Science meeting, and although I was only eight years old I desired to be a Christian Scientist. I did not however become one then, even though I attended the Sunday school and church services for a number of years, until I was old enough, as I thought, to leave both church and Sunday school. I then grew to hate Christian Science, and fought against it in our family. At the same time I would go out and drink, and I also used tobacco, and would lie and do many other wicked things,—practically everything that is wrong.
I was only seventeen years old, but looked and passed for twenty-one before the great change came to me. During the last few years of this kind of life I became troubled with several different ailments, such as catarrh, chilblains, toothache, etc., and every little thing troubled me. I had been persuaded to read Science and Health through for the first time, but did not think there was much in it for me, although I took special notice of the statement that a thorough perusal of the book often healed people. (See Science and Health, p. 446.) One day the toothache which I had nearly all the time became very bad ; my face was swelling more than ever, and when I got home that night the first thing I did was to get out Science and Health. I opened it at the chapter called "Christian Science Practice," and I had not read very far before the toothache ceased, and I had only one return of it, which was in the following year.
Encouraged by this experience, I at once began to study Science and Health, and when I had read it through the second time the desire for a wild life had left me. For the next year I suffered more from the other ailments than I had suffered all my life before, but I came out in the end with a lasting desire to live right and without the least bodily ailment. I have since had some dental work done without the slightest pain. I have not had sickness of any description since, and recently passed a medical examination for insurance as a perfections, the doctor being told that I was a Christian Scientist. I now control a prosperous and well-established business, where I make good use of the understanding I have gained from the study of Science and Health, and I can safely say that no one has lived more happy or contented than I have in the last nine years.
