My knowledge of Christian Science is limited, yet I have...

My knowledge of Christian Science is limited, yet I have often derived comfort and help through its application. Only lately I have had wonderful proof of what Christian Science will do for mortals, and it is with a grateful heart I would tell of this experience. Sept. 10, 1911, our eleven-year-old boy was suddenly taken ill with a severe bowel complaint and vomiting. The physician whom we called advised us to take the boy at once to the hospital and have the specialists make an examination, as to all appearance there was appendicitis, which would necessitate an operation. For years my sister, whenever she spoke of God, had referred to Him as Love, and yet I did not seem to be able to rise to the apprehension and recognition of such a God; but in this case I clung to the thought of divine Love and tried to realize that it would protect my child. With such quieting thoughts in my mind we arrived at the hospital, where the immediate examination ended with the same verdict we had received from our family physician. The operation was performed on the same day, and the surgeons then discovered that the appendix was in good condition, but that the boy had a double twist of the bowels. The physician's opinion was that this condition dated back to the child's birth, and he considered the case not only complicated and serious, but such as he had never met with before.

I told my sister all this, and asked for Christian Science treatment to be taken up for the child. The operation was a much more serious one than in a case of appendicitis, and although fever was expected to set in, the boy was entirely free from it, the pain grew less, and everything went harmoniously. We took him home at an earlier date than we had believed possible at first, though we did so with the physician's explicit instructions that in case pain should set in, he or our family physician must be sent for without delay. When a few days later the boy began to feel pain, I did not send for the physician, but endeavored to see in place of the child the spiritual man, perfect and without pain, and I read aloud the 23d and 91st Psalms, with the result that the pain subsided and did not return. How the case might have turned out without Christian Science treatment I do not know and would rather not try to imagine, but I know this much, that it took a rapid course and was attended by comparatively little suffering, with no untoward incidents occurring. These wonderful proofs of God's everpresent, protecting love awakened in me the desire to know more of this power that shields us.

I would also like to mention that Christian Science was a wonderful help to me at the birth of my now six-year-old daughter. The same child, when beginning to walk, had inflammation of the hip-joints. She had been examined by the family physician and three other doctors, besides an X-ray examination, and there was a consensus of opinion. Christian Science treatment was, however, taken up, and in about a week's time the child was healed. Long after our family physician, referring to her case, said: "Was it not wonderful about your little girl? If my opinion had not been supported, I could believe that I was mistaken, but three other physicians expressed themselves identically."
