[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE LIGHT SHINES ON

DARKNESS and cold and terror all about,
Grief and despondency and doubt;
But in the distance, lo, a light beams out,
And shineth on.

And as I bend my footsteps toward the light,
Larger it grows and evermore more bright;
A beakoning star from out a darksome night,
The light shines on.

Alas, alas, a chasm unaware!
Terror of fear; instead of hope, despair!
But up afar a steady glow is there,—
The light shines on.

Now up and on and toward the light once more!
The way grows brighter, clearer than before,—
Welcome as haven on a storm-beat shore,
The light shines on.

At last, effulgence as of perfect day,
A radiance glowing, glorious always.
And through eternity, with fadeless ray,
The light shines on.
