It would be impossible for me to express in words my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me. It is now nearly two years ago that, during my engagement in the London tournament, I awoke one morning to find that both my eyes were very much swollen and bloodshot, and it was only with great pain that I could slightly open them. A doctor was sent for, who advised me to consult an eye specialist without delay, and he made an appointment for me to do so the same day. I consulted one of the well-known specialists in Harley street, London, and my eyes were thoroughly examined. The left one was found to be twisted considerably out of its proper place and the sight almost gone; the right eye was not quite so bad. I was told by the specialist that I should have to wear eye-glasses as long as I lived, and the only chance I had of ever getting my sight back again was by an operation; but it was far too risky, and he would not recommend me to have it performed. I found myself unable to read a newspaper, and afraid to cross the road if any traffic was about, and this was the case for a considerable time afterward, when I was wearing eye-glasses. For twelve months I tried all kinds of glasses, and in that time had consulted five different specialists and had just about given up all hope of ever getting my sight right again, for I really thought I should lose the sight of the left eye altogether, since the sight seemed to get worse instead of better.

In this miserable condition Christian Science was brought to my notice by a letter-card I received from Manchester, dated Sept. 1, 1909, asking me to make my way to the Christian Science church, Sloane terrace, London, and place myself in their hands, assuring me that I should soon get the relief I wished for. I had never heard of Christian Science before this, and I read the letter over and over, and thought what a beautiful expression of confidence it was. Why this confidence? I asked myself. Well, I know the reason now, because the friend (for it must have been a friend, although we are not acquainted) knew by experience what Christian Science could do for me. I took the advice offered, and got the loan of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. At first I could only read it a few minutes at a time, so my wife read it for me. It so impressed me that I attended the Wednesday evening meeting. What struck me most was the welcome every one receives, and I went away fully convinced that what I had heard was common sense. I have been a regular attendant ever since, with the result that my eyesight is now all right again.

I cannot express my gratitude to the person who brought this wonderful teaching of truth to my notice. My eyes were healed during the last Thanksgiving service in the church. I had been in church a short time, when I was compelled to take off my eye-glasses through pain. I forgot I had them off during the service, but on leaving the church I realized that I had not been wearing them and I immediately put them on. I had soon to take them off again, however, through the pain I experienced. Then the thought came to me, It is the New Year. Why not turn over a new leaf and do without them? and I have not worn them since. From that time I have been able to do anything I have wished to, for my eyesight is as good now as ever it was. This is indeed a blessing to one who has to depend on his eyesight for a livelihood, and has been compelled to wear eye-glasses continually for nearly sixteen months, for it is only when he receives such blessings as these that one realizes and believes the power of Truth as illustrated and given to every one by Christian Science.
