Christian Science teaches intelligent obedience to the law...
Sligo (Ireland) Times
Christian Science teaches intelligent obedience to the law of God as taught by the Founder of the Christian religion, which healed the sick then and does so now. Humanity has always been engaged in a desperate struggle for existence, and an eager search for relief from its pains and sorrows. Many material remedies—animal, vegetable, and mineral—have been tried and have failed to heal, but it has been constantly preached that sin can be overcome by the power of Christianity. Forty-five years ago Mrs. Eddy found that the spirit of Christianity also heals physical disorders. She discovered the Principle from which it came, and that it was powerful to act for other sufferers besides herself. She has given her discovery to the world, with rules which every sincere seeker can apply for himself. Not for the purpose of doing without the service of doctors, for we find on page 150 of the text-book, Science and Health, that "the mission of Christian Science now, as in the time of its earlier demonstration, is not primarily one of physical healing . . . but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."
To study the text-book for oneself is the only satisfactory way to become acquainted with Christian Science.) It is better than depending on the answers of one who may himself be only a beginner in its study. One can then avoid the mistake of accepting the relative for the absolute, which is a stumbling-block that has upset many clever people. Dr. Johnson fell into this trap when he thumped his stick on the ground to prove that Bishop Berkeley's theory of the unreality of matter was incredible. "A totally irrelevant proceeding," Huxley said. Sensations of pain and disease seem very real, but we learn in Christian Science that it is not beyond the power of infinite Love, "who healeth all thy diseases," to blot out these sensations and their cause, and we are also taught how to avail ourselves of this healing truth.
