All I have and all I am, I owe to the understanding gained...
All I have and all I am, I owe to the understanding gained by the study of Mrs. Eddy's teaching, as given in all the books and papers published under her guidance. It is about five years since I was so wonderfully healed.
I had heard of Christian Science some years before that time, when a stranger gave me some Journals and a copy of Science and Health, and told me that if I would read them I could be healed. I thought this foolish, as I was crippled in my right arm, due to a terrible operation for a malignant growth. Both knees were crippled from a fall; I had stomach and bowel trouble from childhood, and the doctors said I must be operated on as soon as my strength would permit. I was also subject to neuralgia and rheumatism. I was told that in two or three years I should have a return of the growth; and my right arm never ceased to ache, although everything possible was done to relieve the pain. It seemed foolish to expect ever to be well, and in less than four years I was on the operating-table once more. I wanted them to operate on the lower bowel, but they said it was too late, that I could not endure it; so I came home once more, hopeless as it were, the doctors saying all that could be done was to give me opiates.
But God is good, and He sent a friend that I knew well as a Christian woman. She wrote, telling me that if I would read Mrs. Eddy's book I could be healed. She sent me an old copy, which I read and reread half way through or more. I read with the Bible close beside me, and all this time this friend's mother (an old lady) was writing me the best of Christian Science letters every day. And what a revelation came to me when I realized that God is Love, that all He made is good, and that He made all! Then this thought came, that if He made all, it must all be good. Then I said to myself, "Why, that is just what Mrs. Eddy has taught all through the book," and how my heart went up in thankfulness to her and to God.
