THE LECTURES

Frank H. Leonard delivered a lecture on "Christian Science: A Demonstrable Religion," in the Y. M. C. A. Auditorium Thursday evening, Sept. 22. The speaker was introduced by Mayor Jamieson, who said in part,—

We each have, I believe, some knowledge of God and His supreme goodness, and our presence here this evening clearly indicates that we are looking for more light. The history of the human race is one of struggle and strivings along the road of progress, with anguish and groanings under the oppressors, with blind groping in the darkness of antiquity, on through the dim light of medieval times to what we know in our day as the Christian era. I think we all believe what has been termed "the sweet story of old, when Jesus was here among men;" that Jesus, the Christ manifest in the flesh, dwelt for a brief time with men, spoke as never man spoke, and did as never man did. He not only preached, but practised the precepts that he taught. His every teaching had an eternal significance, applicable to all time. Before his earthly career, during that time and for all time, the Christ-spirit, or Truth, has ever been available for mankind; for we are told that "before Abraham was, I am." The eternal verities always existed, now exist, and always will exist. It is for us to apprehend them and to apply them, and we are today in the brightest day of all the days, of all the years, of all the ages, enjoying to a fuller extent than ever before the light that he saw and enjoyed, the "light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

In this our day a restatement or rediscovery of the Christ-teachings, which had become dimmed by the neglect and dust of ages, has been comprehensively set before us and brought to our attention, through the careful study and years of prayerful and earnest work of Mary Baker Eddy, author of the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the text-book of Christian Science, wherein is set forth clearly the practical and scientific application of the Christ-teaching. We have with us this evening one who is authorized to speak of the subject to us.
