Eight or nine years ago I was operated upon for a serious uterine trouble, but afterward I was no better, rather the worse, and for several years I took treatment and medicine under the care of three different surgeons. At the end of that time I was completely broken down in health, so that I could not retain my position as a stenographer, and ruin stared me in the face. I was at home for three months, sick and out of work, taking treatments from the family doctor and also electrical treatments for my hearing from a specialist, as I seemed to be very deaf. He told me that both eardrums were affected, and unless what he did helped me, nothing else would; but after the treatments ceased I became worse.
At that time I suffered from extreme nervousness, bilious attacks, severe headaches, also an affection of both eyes for which a specialist had given me glasses and told me to wear them daily for at least a year; but, finding they did not help me at all, I threw them away. At night my eyes were so tired I could not bear the least light. I felt exhausted all the time, and tonics did me no good. A bowel disorder was a lifelong ailment, and besides the uterine trouble, the worst of all, I began to suffer from a condition of the feet. Every morning both feet would swell so that for three or four hours I could only hobble. When I went to the doctor, he said he could give me nothing that would help me. Added to these afflictions I was becoming mentally unbalanced, due to continual suffering and anxiety for the future.
At this time I became acquainted with Christian Science. A young friend of mine, also a stenographer (and a Jewess), with whom I went to business, she on crutches, became helpless from spinal and hip diseases, and after seven operations the doctors finally left her bedridden and pronounced her a cripple for life. She was healed by Christian Science treatment in a few weeks, and today is strong and well. This impressed me, and I decided to investigate Christian Science. I had heard of Science and Health and wanted to read it, thinking I might be able to understand some of it and apply it to my own case.
