The fact of healing through Christian Science being...

Rockford (Ill.) Register-Gazette

The fact of healing through Christian Science being now quite generally admitted, critics seem to have taken up the task of proving that its philosophy is wrong. Because its philosophy, or theory, does not coincide with their views, critics assume that it is at fault, but this of course does not prove it to be so. The correctness of a theory is generally conceded to be determined by the manner in which it works out in practice, and that the theory of Christian Science has been demonstrated to be correct in hundreds of thousands of instances cannot be disproved. For critics who have no demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science to claim that they know more about its real nature and the basis of its cures than those who are daily engaged in its practice, would seem rather unreasonable, to say the least.

Christian Science does not take away the responsibility for a specific sin by pointing out the fact that all sin is of the carnal mind and is imposed upon rather than originated by the individual. On the contrary, it distinctly teaches that the individual is responsible for his own sins, and that he will eventually be punished for allowing himself to be swayed, influenced, or imposed upon by evil of any nature.

That Christian Science drives sympathy out of the heart is not true. Christian Science teaches the utmost sympathy for the sufferer and for the evil-doer, although it has no sympathy whatever with the suffering or the evil. Christian Science does not break down the sense of truthfulness by teaching its students to deny the testimony of the senses. The testimony of the senses, if accepted, would compel us to believe that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Would any one be in danger of becoming untruthful by denying this false testimony?
