THE LECTURES

An audience which filled the large auditorium of the Brooklyn Academy of Music listened most intently to a lecture delivered by the Rev. William P. McKenzie on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 24. He was introduced by Harvey M. Ferris, First Reader of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Brooklyn, under whose auspices the lecture was given. Among other things Mr. Ferris said:—

Hundreds of years ago the false belief that the earth was flat was met by a few bold scholars, who had learned that mind must control the evidence of the physical senses; but it remained for Columbus to prove to the masses the truths which these scholars had discerned. The greatest blessing which attends any discovery is the liberation of thought and the discernment of a law hitherto unknown. Mind has forever whispered to mortals the existence of a supreme controlling power. As a Christian nation, we have accepted the Bible theoretically, and the records show that the greatest works were done by those who seemed to possess the greatest knowledge of this power. In Christ Jesus we find a man intensely practical. He said, "I and my Father are one." "The works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me that the Father hath sent me." Although the world was not ready to go on with the work he commenced, yet the record of what he did, and of what his disciples did through following his teaching, has stood through all these years the strongest magnet of the centuries.

Jesus declared that the "Spirit of truth" would again be made manifest, and he called it "the Comforter." It remained for Mrs. Eddy to realize the healing presence of that Comforter, that Spirit of truth, and through a consecration most devout she has given her discovery to mankind in the name of Christian Science. The words of Gamaliel stand in judgment on this age and on this subject: "Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves ... for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God." Paul writes: "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."—Correspondence.
