The decree of the Circuit Court in the Government's suit against the American Tobacco Company and others declares the tobacco trust a monopoly engaged in an illegal combination, and restrains these holding companies from engaging in foreign and interstate commerce until competition between them is restored. An appeal has been taken to the Supreme Court.
The Standard Oil Company's defense in the Government suit seeking to dissolve the $100,000,000 holding concern, is practically all in. On Jan. 5 the Government will begin the rebuttal testimony, which will take about ten days. In March the argument in the suit will take place before the three judges of the Eight United States Circuit Court in St. Louis.
By a decision of the Circuit Court the Board of Valuation and Assessment of Kentucky is directed to assemble and assess the Southern Pacific Railroad according to law. The suit, however, was to force an assessment on a valuation of $250,000,000 and will mean about $6,000,000 for the State if the Court of Appeals upholds the judgment.
