In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 385) we read, "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself." I would like to tell of one of many demonstrations of the truth of this statement. In March, 1904, I was suffering from a serious attack of illness, and although I had worked faithfully in Christian Science, knowing surely that God is All, and that Truth would heal me, I did not seem to be getting any better. One evening at ten o'clock a messenger came with a request that I should go at once to a studio building near by, where some one was in urgent need of Christian Science help. It was a cold, stormy evening, and the first thought which came was, "I cannot go, I have more need to stay at home and help myself;" however, I am thankful to say that this selfish suggestion was immediately overcome.

It was a case of accident, and the conditions were such that I had to remain all night, alone with the patient, and as I have already stated, it was a bitterly cold night in March. There was not a particle of heat in the building after midnight, and as I had left my warm room rather hurriedly, and had only a short distance to walk, I was not very warmly dressed. I have never before, nor since, experienced such discomfort, such cold, as I did that night; but there was work to do, and it had to be done quickly. It was a night to be remembered forever, with deepest humility and everlasting gratitude to God for Christian Science—the half can never be told. I went home about seven o'clock in the morning, and after breakfast I sat down to study more of this glorious truth which had done such wonderful works, and then I remembered the condition I was in when I left the house the night before. All the trouble had gone, every symptom of it had disappeared. I was perfectly well! On Wednesday evening, Feb. 19, 1908, the young woman to whose assistance I was called that evening in March, 1904, stood up in Second Church here and told of what Christian Science had done for her that night; and as she stated, there was not a mark or scar left on her body as a result of the accident.

My gratitude to God, and to Mrs. Eddy who has taught us how to know God, can only be "expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character" (Science and Health, p. 4).
