[Written for the Sentinel.]

Overcome Evil with Good

Pilgrim on the upward way,
Wrestling with disease and sin,
This thy watchword in the fray,
Take the cross, the crown to win.

Do the dreams of error cast
Darkling shadows o'er thy path?
Trust, and thou shalt find at last,
Joy shall be thy aftermath.

In the quiet hidden way.
Grows humility's sweet flower;
Earthly wisdom's proudest sway
Bows before its gentle power.

Purity's inspiring touch
Brings the benisons of heaven;
And to one that "loveth much,"
Is the depth of sin forgiven.
