Faith and Fees

The Ohio senate has voted down the bill giving fees to Christian Science healers, and Senator Lamb is quoted as saying he doesn't believe a man can preach with power on a stated salary. Did Senator Lamb ever try preaching without a salary? What kind of a senator does he think he would make without a salary? What manner of doctrine does he think  he would preach on nothing a year?

A good preacher deserves to live—not on handouts and donations—but on a stated salary, by which he can provide for his own needs and those of his family, with a little left to assist his needier neighbors.

The doctor who cures with pills and lotions is entitled to his fee. If the Christian Scientist effects cures by other methods, there is no particular reason, as Lieutenant-Governor Harding says, why he shouldn't be remunerated.
