In gratitude for the many blessings that have come to...
In gratitude for the many blessings that have come to me since accepting the teachings of Christian Science, I write this testimony. For fifteen years I had been a sufferer from rheumatism. Physicians had pronounced my case incurable as they said it was inherited. This suffering made me afraid to go out in damp or windy weather; also afraid of the food I ate; and after a day's work I expected a night of pain, which usually followed a busy day. After taking up the daily study of Christian Science, these fears gradually disappeared and for five years I have proved, by going out in all kinds of weather, eating what was placed before me, and doing whatever work was necessary, that "it is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." Although deeply grateful for the relief from pain, the mental transformation that has taken place is a source of daily thanksgiving. The Bible has become a new book, when read in this light, and has a practical meaning for to-day. I have learned that only as we practise this truth do we gain more of the knowledge that makes free. The sentinel and Journai are messengers, and contain many helpful lessons. My desire is to be faithful in the work of each helpful as in this way alone can we show our gratitude to God, to our Leader, and to the Cause of Christian Science. —JULIA B. GATES, Spokane, Wash.
