Christ our Present Saviour
Macon (Ga.) News
While it is true that Christ, working in and through all branches of his Church, brings to light rather than creates life, health, joy, and immortality, it is as misleading for our critic to say, if Christian Scientists "go to heaven," "they were saved before they became Christian Scientists," as it would be for a Christian Scientists to say, if members of other denominations ever "go to heaven," it is because they are such good Christians they are saved in spite of the fact that they are orthodox. And, while it is true that a large number of the best as well as some of the poorest members of the older churches have come to Christian Science because it promised and gave more than they could find elsewhere, our ranks are being largely built up by those who have found salvation as well as health through Christian Science. In fact, Christ, as brought to light in Christian Science, has lost none of his ancient and eternal healing, comforting, and saving power; many are finding him through Christian Science who never sought nor found him elsewhere; and many are also finding him in a larger, truer, and more helpful way than they could find him elsewhere.
The daughter of one of the leading lawyers of Southwest Georgia told me some time ago that for years she and her mother worked and prayed to bring her father to Christ, but that all their efforts seemed to have failed. A few years ago her father commenced the study of Christian Science, and was healed of his diseases, morally reformed, and spiritually transformed from one of the most irreligious to the most religious man of his community. And while the daughter at first opposed Christian Science, and is now a better member of her own church than before she knew of Christian Science, she has been forced to recognize that God has answered her prayer in a better way than she knew how to ask it. A friend of mine who studied for the orthodox ministry, but who became an agnostic through his study of the old theology, tells me that he was brought back to God, Christ, and the Bible through Christian Science. He also tells me that the present-day healing and saving works of Christian Science led him to see that the miracles in the Bible were not only true, but the natural and normal expressions of the law of divine Love. A lady of this city, who was a member of one of our leading churches, and who through Christian Science has been saved from agnosticism and healed of many of the "ills that flesh is heir to," writing of her debt to Christian Science, says among other things, "My physical healing has been a marvel to all who know me, and I appreciate it as only one can who has spent many years in bondage to disease; but my deliverance from sins over which I had wept as incurable is to me the most glorious deliverance." One of the editors of our Christian Science periodicals writes me, "My heart is daily stirred to its depths as I read the testimonies sent in to us telling of such depths of woe and such glorious deliverances." And the time would fail us to tell of the many signs of Christ's coming in Christian Science that we are eye-witnesses to, not to mention the testimony of thousands who are witnesses to the fact that they are being led, through the ministry of Christian Science, from sickness to health, from death to life, from despair to hope, from grief to joy, from a carnal to a spiritual life; in a word, from "the enemy" to Christ.
I have cited these few cases, not because they are exceptional, but because they are typical; and because the grateful and reliable testimony of thousands who have been healed and saved through Christian Science, more than confirms everything I have claimed for it. And, with grateful reverance, I wish to add that all sincere and faithful Christian Scientists have the inner testimony, as well as some of the outward signs, that God is with them in every effort they unselfishly and lovingly make to preach the Good News and to do the works of Christian Science.
