SONS AND DAUGHTERS

For many centuries the Christian world in general thought of God only as Father. With the coming of Christian Science, God was fully revealed as both Father and Mother, complete and perfect, the parent Mind, or Principle, of all that really exists. From this it follows that man, the image and likeness of God, embodying every aspect of the parent Mind, must reflect in all their spiritual beauty and perfection both the masculine and the feminine qualities of the one Father-Mother God.

This premise exposes as mistaken belief the perversion which would rob individual man of his wholeness, separate male and female into sexes, burden everyone with incompleteness, and limit the scope of one's thought, action, and achievement to the expression of the qualities of the sex into which he is humanly born. In the account of creation in the first chapter of Genesis the loving Father-Mother, the divine Principle, or Us, is recorded as saying, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness;" and the account adds, "So God created man in his own image,... male and female created he them." In this ideal man, male and female characteristics, mingling, complement and support each other, each attribute taking its proper place in expressing the completeness of man's being.

An understanding and acceptance of this completeness brings the assurance that individual ability is not confined to kind or gender. Masculine strength and perspicacity unite with feminine love and vitality in one consciousness, revealing the unlimited capabilities inherent in man's spiritual status as both son and daughter of God. This ushers into human experience greater freedom of thought and a wider scope of action, hence opportunity for enlarged service and achievement.
