"OF GOOD UNDERSTANDING"

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says on page 1 of "Miscellaneous Writings": "To kindle all minds with a gleam of gratitude, the new idea that comes welling up from infinite Truth needs to be understood. The seer of this age should be a sage." And she continues, "Humility is the stepping-stone to a higher recognition of Deity."

In her great lifework Mrs. Eddy showed the close link which exists between the spiritual qualities of understanding and humility. Her own deep spiritual understanding, humbly and persistently sought, was expressed in her giving to the world "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science; in the founding of her Church; and in the healing of all forms of sickness and sin. But these accomplishments were not followed by any self-aggrandizement or self-praise on the part of Mrs. Eddy.

A superb expression of humility and love can be found in the Preface to the textbook, where she says of herself (p. ix), "To-day, though rejoicing in some progress, she still finds herself a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ." Our Leader always endeavored to follow closely in the footsteps of our great Master. Christ Jesus, who said (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing," and she expected her students to do the same.
