Christian Science was presented...
Christian Science was presented to me by a very dear aunt when I was a small child. My mother had just passed on, and the task of explaining the experience of death to my sister and me was given to this aunt. She was a young student of Christian Science, and even though I do not remember exactly what she said, yet I received a lasting impression that God was my Father-Mother and would always take care of me and of my mother too. The thought of death and the sense of grief did not even appear.
Those few basic truths told us so lovingly at that time slayed with me all through my school days, even though Christian Science was not practiced in our home. I had a copy of the Christian Science textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I told my young friends that I believed in Christian Science. But it was not until I was in high school that I decided to go to the Christian Science Sunday School. How powerful is the seed of Truth that must lake root and grow!
The real test of whether or not I wanted to depend solely upon Christian Science for healing came when I was faced with a physical difficulty. I never knew what the trouble was called, but it seemed to be an infection or growth which would not heal. For about a year I had to wear bandages. I had many discouraging moments, but I was forced to study and to take my stand for Christian Science. I had the help of several practitioners at different times. One day I was lying on the bed, feeling utterly discouraged, and I bewail to think of this aunt, who had given me so many truths to hold to and who had herself been healed of tuberculosis. I felt a wave of gratitude to her and also to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Christian Science. I knew that Mrs. Eddy could not have done this had she not proved every step of the way herself. I thought of Jesus' great understanding and trust when he said (John 11:41). "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me," even before he saw the evidence of Lazarus' healing. And I knew I was healed. I did not see the evidence of the healing for a few days, but I was so sure of it that I completely forgot about the trouble, and complete healing came quickly.
