Even before I took up the study...
Even before I took up the study of Christian Science I lost the fear of sickness through hearing a school friend, who was a Christian Scientist, state that disease is unreal. This truth also helped me frequently in the overcoming of colds, influenza, and malaria, to which I had been subject.
After I had been studying Christian Science for some time I had an attack of blood poisoning. I struggled alone for two days to see the nothingness of it, and then asked a practitioner for help. The fever and most of the poison rapidly disappeared and I felt quite well, but the right leg remained exceedingly swollen and continually discharged. It was drawn up, too, for a time, but suddenly straightened out, and I was able to use it. Although this unhealed condition continued for nearly two years, there was hardly ever any pain, and, apart from some difficulty in walking, I was able to get about and do all I had to do in connection with my work, and many other things besides. All this time I was gaining more understanding of Christian Science, and one morning I woke to find the healing complete.
Mrs. Eddy says on page 331 of Science and Health, "Life is Mind, the creator reflected in His creations," and I have found that as I have understood this, my human existence has become fuller and richer. For a long time the beauty or ugliness of surroundings greatly affected me, but one day, while I was painting flowers in a garden, the understanding of the omnipresent beauty of spiritual creation—"the creator reflected in His creations"—came with vividness, and this sense of beauty is with me everywhere now, while at the same time my human surroundings have become more beautiful.
