Maryville Times

A recent issue carried a piece of advice from which I kindly beg leave to dissent. This was the recommendation that those desiring "the unmitigated, uncolored facts" concerning the life and work of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, should secure a certain book written by one who was distinctly unfriendly, unfair, and uninformed on his subject.

No history can be correct or helpful when it is inspired by prejudice or ignorance. For a fair presentation of the life and works of Mary Baker Eddy permit me to mention the following books, which may be read or obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms throughout the world: "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur; "Christian Science and Its Discoverer" by E. Mary Ramsay; and "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait" by the Rev. Lyman P. Powell. Incidentally, let me say that Dr. Powell writes from the standpoint of an Episcopal minister.

The unfailing test of any individual lies in his accomplishments. Jesus said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits," and on this platform the work of Mary Baker Eddy stands out as a beacon light. This statement in her book, "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 11), conveys her thought on the subject of unjust criticism: "Because I can do much general good to such as hate me, I do it with earnest, special care—since they permit me no other way, though with tears have I striven for it. When smitten on one cheek, I have turned the other: I have but two to present."
