Shining Away the Shadows

The Apostle John declared, "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says (pp. 503, 504), "God, Spirit, dwelling in infinite light and harmony from which emanates the true idea, is never reflected by aught but the good." Then God, Spirit, is perpetual light and permits no darkness, for the full effulgence of light radiates and manifests only the glory of divine perfection.

How often human lives seem to be darkened, limited, frustrated by allowing the shadow of an unhappy past experience to influence the present outlook or by a suppositional shadow of fear claiming to loom over the future! Sometimes temptation may argue that a past loss, grief, or mistake can so influence the present living and activity as to hamper, fetter, and perhaps entirely obstruct a glorious fulfillment of good in this very hour and day. It may be that timidity, fostered by remembrance of a past regret, tries to hinder a progressive step in unfolding good.
