Such is my gratitude for release from the bondage of self-will that I should like to relate something which occurred more than ten years ago, in the hope that others similarly situated may be helped by the telling. At the time I was in the advertising business. One of America's large concerns bought out a local store. Since I had had experience with this kind of merchandise I solicited the account, even though I knew that many older agencies would also do so. Alas, I fell under the spell of "salesmanship psychology," which means scheming for ways and means of ingratiating oneself in the eyes of a prospective customer! No stone was left unturned, yet after two weeks I had not been able to present my proposed plan to the new manager.
One morning, while again on my way to the store, I was stopped short by an inner ultimatum which might be called the "still small voice." It said: "That firm has been highly successful without you for more than eighty years. It does not need you now. But you, as a student of Christian Science, need to learn more about the one Mind which operates to benefit all. Relinquish selfish planning and quietly recognize your spiritual nature, which does not strive or push. Which is the more vital achievement, to get that account, or deeply to know that all are governed by one Father?"
The healing was instantaneous. I returned to my office, put the folder of sketches and copy in a bottom drawer, and went humbly to work on another project. Soon I left the office and spent the rest of the day in another part of the city. Though outwardly occupied, I was constantly aware of the unlabored action of the Life divine, in which all are embraced.
