Development of Spiritual Gifts through Diligence

[Written Especially for Young people]

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 135), "Christianity as Jesus taught it was not a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light."

Mrs. Eddy knew that the gift of Christian healing had come to her, not as a special gift, but as the result of her search for a purely spiritual method of healing. Her diligence and faithful obedience to God in this sacred talk are plainly set forth in her biography by Sibyl Wilbur. Some may have hardly realized, until they read this biography, how huge was the task of giving this precious discovery to the world; how unremitting was Mrs. Eddy in her systematic search of the Holy Scriptures, and how superb was her courage in overcoming doubt, disappointment, and discouragement in the fulfillment of her God-given mission.

A standard dictionary defines "diligence" as "persevering application," "devoted and painstaking effort to accomplish what is undertaken." These qualities were surely manifested by our Leader at all times.
