Bible Notes
[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on March 30, 1941.]
"Most High" (Ps. 92:1) —This is a translation of the Hebrew "Elyon," which is derived from a root meaning originally "to go up, or ascend," and then "to excel or be superior." The Greek Version renders it simply "Highest,"
"Blessed be the Lord: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city" (Ps. 31:21)—It is noteworthy that the word which is here rendered "strong" can also mean "fortified" or "fenced," and so "fenced in," "beleaguered," or "besieged." Consequently, we find that Smith translates: "Blessed be the Lord! For he showed me his wonderful kindness in a besieged city;" while the early Septuagint Version had: "Blessed be the Lord: for he has magnified his mercy in a fortified city."
