Understanding and Harmony

When Jesus said, "I and my Father are one" (John 10:30), he gave utterance to one of the greatest of spiritual truths. Christian Science reveals that God, infinite Spirit, is the Father, the cause or creator of all that really exists, including man. And since God is Spirit or Mind, man is His idea, perfectly and continuously expressed. Perpetual unity thus exists between God and man; or, in other words, man is ever at one with God. The greatness of this truth is seen when one considers that material sense can take on cognizance of it; that, indeed, material sense is utterly blind even to the existence of God and man.

In spite of the fact that he endured great tribulation, that he was persecuted throughout the whole of his ministry on earth, and that he finally suffered crucifixion at the hands of those who failed to understand what he taught or to esteem the grandeur of his mission, Christ Jesus lived a life of gladness and joy. To his disciples before he left them he said (John 15:11), "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full." He had instructed them in "the deep things of God," the things that pertain to eternal life; he had proved to them the power of spiritual understanding over material so-called law by healing disease and overcoming sin and death, thus testifying to the truth of man's unity with perfect Mind, and bringing to them a sense of spiritual harmony and joy. The Master unquestionably proved that spiritual understanding and harmony are inseparable.

Christian Scientists are constantly proving this for themselves. From the very beginning of their study of Christian Science they have found that as their understanding of Truth and Love increases, so do their peace and joy. How many of them can look back on years of distress, due to ill-health or perhaps sinful living, as a thing of the past! Christian Science has revealed to them the perfection of God and man, the perfect unity which exists between God and man—has revealed the fact that imperfection is no part of reality, no part of man, and that disease and sin are unreal; and with the revelation has come the healing of the sickness or the overcoming of the sin, with resultant harmony, thus showing that understanding and harmony are united. "Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 506 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures;" and she adds, "The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace."
