Loss Is Gain

I turned aside from thought of mortal gain,
Seeing that earthly things will fade away;
I gave up dreaming, seeing the promise vain
That paints a glowing picture out of clay;
There is no hope within the fragile seeming
That finds its shallow life in idle dreaming.

I gave up hate and found a love so new
That all my fancied wrongs were put aside;
Love led me onward to a higher view
Of loveliness. I put away my pride
In worldliness, and found life good,
Because my listening ear heard God, and understood.
