How Can We Help to Prevent War?
Every Christian feels the challenge of the present age. Has invention, when applied to the uses of evil, proved to be a self-destroying tower of Babel? Or will the power of Christianity lead humanity to use its abilities for constructive and useful purposes alone?
Many are the prophecies of peace recorded in the Bible, and many are the peace-lovers who pore over them in anxious hope of their fulfillment. Micah presents this cheering picture: "And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."
Christian Scientists know that "the law shall go forth of Zion." They know that the divine law of Love, the will of God, has been revealed to humanity through the revelation of Christian Science. They know that this law is demonstrable, and that with them lies the sacred duty to apply it to the highest extent of their understanding in the cause of world peace. Our beloved Leader "prayed daily that there be no more war" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 286). In an article entitled "How Strife May Be Stilled" are Mrs. Eddy's words (ibid., p. 279): "The First Commandment in the Hebrew Decalogue—'Thou shalt have no other gods before me'—obeyed, is sufficient to still all strife. God is the divine Mind. Hence the sequence: Had all peoples one Mind, peace would reign."
