Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Pennsylvania.

In answer to the question, "Do you believe in divine healing?" the pastor of First Baptist Church of Lansdale replied partly as follows in the Norristown Times Herald of August 11, 1934: "The healing ministry of the Christian Science church cannot be ignored. Their constituency is largely made up of members of our various churches who have become Christian Scientists because that church has helped them physically. . . . To say that Christian Science does not heal is to ignore facts."

The progress that Christian Science is making in breaking down prejudice is evidenced also by our receiving several invitations from church organizations of other denominations to address their members. Two requests from colleges have also been received, one for an address on the subject of Christian Science and one for literature to be made available to students and for pictures of The Mother Church to be posted on the bulletin board of the college. One invitation came from the pastor of a church to address his congregation on the subject of tolerance, an invitation which was also extended to representatives of other denominations, with a view of showing what these religious organizations have in common and pointing out the needless and harmful barriers that prejudice produces between different denominations.

Hong Kong and Canton.

There is again much cause for gratitude for the greatly improved attitude of the press. Although Christian Science was mentioned many times in the press during the period under review, only once was it deemed necessary to write a letter of correction.

It is gratifying to report that Hong Kong and Canton newspapers continue to publish our Lesson-Sermon excerpts, including a special excerpt from the Thanksgiving Day Lesson-Sermon. Some of these reports are accompanied by advertisements of our church services and Reading Room.

Good notices were secured of the report of the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, and local newspapers carried a news item regarding a change of personnel in The Christian Science Board of Directors. It is interesting to note that a young army officer upon reading one of these reports in the Hong Kong Daily Press, inquired about the Christian Science textbook, and later was led to obtain a copy of it, and to attend a Wednesday evening meeting, afterwards receiving a healing of lung trouble through studying Science and Health.

As mentioned in my last report, a Chinese translation of excerpts from a Christian Science lecture was kindly prepared by a Chinese student of Christian Science. This translation was duly published in one of the best Chinese newspapers with good results. A framed specimen of the original Chinese translation now hangs in the reception room of the offices of the Committee on Publication of The Mother Church. Many visitors to the recent Annual Meeting examined it, and spoke of its beautiful work. It is hoped to publish a translation of the lecture which will be given this year.

Hong Kong and Canton newspapers draw frequently on The Christian Science Monitor for articles and editorials, generally giving due credit to our international daily newspaper. Much favorable comment was heard about the Progress Edition of the Monitor and the Weekly Magazine Section, from which many articles have been reprinted.
