Christian Science was recommended to me for my seven months' old baby, after two physicians had done all that was within their power for him, and we had unsuccessfully tried all the remedies available at the drug store in which my husband worked. Since birth our baby had suffered agonies from eczema, and hardly an organ of his body operated normally. A Christian Science practitioner was employed for about six weeks, during which time the bowels and stomach began to act normally and the child began to gain a little, but the eczema and kidney trouble did not clear up. I did not feel financially able to continue with the practitioner, but I continued to study the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I clung as faithfully as I knew how to their teachings, for by that time I knew Christian Science to be the truth which Jesus had taught. In three months the child had a siege of boils all over his body, although it was attended by practically no suffering. In two or three weeks they all disappeared, and thereafter there was no manifestation of eczema.

Clinging to the truth, and trying so hard to understand Christian Science for the child's help, I was soon amazed to realize that all my own troubles had dropped away, I knew not when. These included constipation, an internal trouble of years' standing, tonsillitis, and headaches.

The child was healed of every discordant condition except the old kidney trouble, which for seventeen years gradually grew worse, in spite of the faithful work of many practitioners over periods of months at a time. As material methods had failed us in the beginning, there was absolutely nothing to go back to, and nothing to do but to work and pray, and seek for the healing. Though they were terrible years, they taught me that "only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized" (Science and Health, p. 167). I gained a knowledge of God's love which I should probably never have learned except through tribulation. At last, when the trouble, instead of being outgrown as was sometimes predicted, became almost unbearable, a practitioner was recommended to us who, within two months after taking the case, brought complete and permanent healing through her work.
