Up to eight years ago I was continually seeking relief...
Up to eight years ago I was continually seeking relief from stomach trouble. I had had this condition for many years, also a heart difficulty which was said to be connected with the stomach trouble. After consulting doctors and getting no relief, I tried other so-called cures, such as chiropractic, osteopathy, and a system of dieting under the supervision of a food specialist. These failed to help; therefore I went back to the doctors again, not knowing what else to do. This time I went to a well-known specialist on stomach troubles, who said I had a fallen stomach, and prescribed a specially made corset for me. I tried to wear this for about a year, but found no difference in my condition. Not knowing what else to do, I returned to this specialist. After another examination, he honestly admitted that he did not know what else to do for me, but suggested that I might be benefited if I went away for a while into the country and was relieved of all household cares. Although it was a hardship, I managed to get away eventually; but the stomach trouble continued, and I lived under a constant fear of power in matter, especially with regard to food. While in this state of mind, Christian Science was presented to me by another guest at the house, and I was immediately impressed when it was brought to my attention that in believing there was power in food for either good or evil, I was giving power to that which had none, since God is All-power. This was a new thought for me, and it had never occurred to me that I could turn in that direction for help.
Having tried everything else to no avail, I had nothing to lose in trying Christian Science, so I began diligently to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and other Christian Science literature kindly furnished by this new-found friend, who patiently answered my many questions. Slowly, many fears and false beliefs began to fall away, and I was seeing things in a very different light. I improved perceptibly, and I know now that I began to be reborn spiritually that spring when this truth dawned upon my consciousness and I became acquainted with Life, Truth, and Love — in other words, with God.
Christian Science has been a wonderful help in the training of my elder boy, who was only four years old when it found us, and who became a regular attendant of the Sunday school at that time. I am very grateful for the Sunday school. A second son has been born to us, and in this experience I was especially grateful to Christian Science, upon which we relied. My quick recovery seemed miraculous to my family, who are not Scientists, because some years ago, at the birth of my first son, it was many weeks before I was in a condition to do the things I could now do in a few days. I am also grateful for spiritual enlightenment and freedom from many false beliefs.
