The reverend gentleman who has written about Christian Science...

The reverend gentleman who has written about Christian Science in your columns has made a number of incorrect and misleading statements, a few of which I desire to correct. He writes, "Christian Science in its textbook treats only with the books of Genesis and Revelation, together with such texts as are conveniently suitable." It is true that in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy explains portions of those two books, Genesis and Revelation. By so doing, she gives the "key" to the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures. Through studying the Christian Science textbook, Christian Scientists are gaining a deeper love for the Bible, and a stronger, more intelligent desire than they had before, to practice what the Bible teaches. Christian Scientists as a whole study the Bible diligently.

Christian Science does not teach that Mrs. Eddy is "the successor of Christ Jesus," as this critic asserts. Christian Scientists regard her as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science; and they are grateful because, through her great work, the vital healing work which Christ Jesus did is being restored. This far-reaching fact may offend some of our clerical friends, but it cannot be intelligently denied or refuted.

The critic might have saved himself from some mistakes if he had gained a correct sense of the teaching of Christian Science in regard to Christ Jesus. Referring to his work, Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 18): "Jesus of Nazareth taught and demonstrated man's oneness with the Father, and for this we owe him endless homage. His mission was both individual and collective. He did life's work aright not only in justice to himself, but in mercy to mortals,—to show them how to do theirs, but not to do it for them nor to relieve them of a single responsibility."
