Joining the Church

Why do you desire church membership? This important question was put to a young man who had applied for admission into a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. He gave the following helpful and interesting answer: "I desire to join this church because I am grateful for what Christian Science has done for me. I have had the privilege of attending the Sunday school for many years, and I have learned to apply the teaching of Christian Science. I have had many physical healings, and know that my understanding of Truth has made it possible for me to go on to college. I want also to join the church in order to help others, for in this way I hope to express my gratitude for the help I have received. I feel, too, that I have come to the stage in my development as a Christian Scientist when I need the organization to help me to grow in understanding of the truth."

Since there are doubtless many others who join from similar motives, this young man's answer may be taken to explain the rapid increase in the membership of Christian Science churches throughout the world. Thousands have come to the realization of the fact that if they would grow in the understanding of Truth they must actively express their gratitude for help already received; and this can best be done through the church organization established by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.

Actuated by these motives, what must be the first consideration of one about to join the church? First of all, he must have a true concept of Church as defined by our great Leader; for becoming a church member is both a privilege and a sacred obligation. The mission of Christian Science is to change our thinking, and in this process it changes our concept of Church. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has given us the following clear definition (p. 583): "Church. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle." And in the next paragraph she continues, "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." Thus, as we gain even a little understanding of the true meaning of Church, we can readily see why error would try to prevent us from joining the organization which "affords proof of its utility."
