The Healing Power of God

In Jeremiah it is written, "Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?" And in Isaiah we read, "Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear." How deep is the faith in God's power shown in these passages of Old Testament Scripture! Isaiah and Jeremiah ranked foremost among the prophets of Israel. Their faith in the Almighty lifted them spiritually above their fellows; and, so inspired, they were equipped for the great work of enlightening mankind.

The God of the Hebrew prophets was the God of Christ Jesus, the omnipotent One who is ever willing and ready to hear and to save. But while this is recognized, it has to be admitted that the Prophet of Nazareth greatly clarified the concepts of God held by the Hebrew race. Jesus showed that God, the Holy One of Israel, is the Father of us all; that His loving care is exercised continually towards all mankind. And not only did the Master teach the unfailing love of God, but he proved Love's power by healing all manner of disease through his understanding. The Christian dispensation was ushered in by Christ Jesus with many marvelous works—miracles they are called—of healing; and these works, which were the result of his enlightened faith and understanding, and of extraordinary purity, were meant as examples to be followed by all who should become his disciples, either in his own day or afterwards.

The God of Christ Jesus is the God of the Christian Scientist. Everything the Nazarene taught of God the Christian Scientist accepts. Moreover, the Christian Scientist is doing many of the works of the Master to-day, healing the sick and the sinning, comforting the sorrowing, and repeatedly thwarting the attacks of mankind's bitterest enemy—death. Christianity, as interpreted by Christian Science, is once more enabling its followers to demonstrate the healing power of God. No one need remain in doubt as to the facts. The testimonies given weekly at the Wednesday evening meetings in the Christian Science churches throughout the world, and those published in The Christian Science Journal monthly and in the Christian Science Sentinel weekly, show what is being done through Christian Science. And these testimonies bear witness to but a mere fraction of the healing work which is being accomplished through the power of God understood and demonstrated to-day. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 232 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "In our age Christianity is again demonstrating the power of divine Principle, as it did over nineteen hundred years ago, by healing the sick and triumphing over death."

The fact that Christian Science has made the progress it has in little more than sixty years since its discovery (there are now over two thousand authorized Christian Science churches and societies) goes to show the desire of mankind for something higher and better than material ways of treating disease, something genuinely spiritual. Thinking people are not liable to be led astray by unreliable doctrine. They are apt to appreciate teaching which is trustworthy, especially when proof as to its trustworthiness is forthcoming. And anyone who without prejudice investigates for himself will find that the Christian Science movement has within it a large proportion of thinking people. The fact is that a great many Christian Scientists have embraced the teachings of Christian Science because these teachings have spiritually illumined the Scriptures to them, reconciled revelation and reason, and given them the spiritual understanding whereby to demonstrate for themselves the power of God in the healing of disease and sin.

Our Leader says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 232): "Metaphysical healing, or Christian Science, is a demand of the times. Every man and every woman would desire and demand it, if he and she knew its infinite value and firm basis. The unerring and fixed Principle of all healing is God; and this Principle should be sought from the love of good, from the most spiritual and unselfish motives." It is noteworthy that Mrs. Eddy emphasizes that "Principle [God] should be sought for the love of good, from the most spiritual and unselfish motives"—Principle, the understanding of which heals disease and sin. The reason for this is plain: unless one loves good and is unselfish, he cannot find God, the divine Principle; and without an understanding of Principle he cannot heal the sick and sinning.

When divine Principle is found by us to be omnipresent infinite Love, omnipotent omniactive Mind, what must we do? Apply the understanding we have obtained to the overcoming of every phase of inharmony, with steadfastness, assurance, patience, perseverance, and faith in Principle and its unerring laws. To succeed in healing through the power of God we must understand and be obedient to divine law, placing implicit reliance on revealed Truth.
