In speaking of the Bible, in "Miscellaneous Writings"...

In speaking of the Bible, in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 363), the following reference indicates Mrs. Eddy's esteem for it: "The Bible is the learned man's masterpiece, the ignorant man's dictionary, the wise man's directory."

Your correspondent states, "The Bible is the basis and foundation and starting point of every form of religion that claims the name of 'Christian.'" Christian Science has laid claim to the name of "Christian" because the "basis and foundation and starting point" of all that Christian Science teaches is in the Bible. Christian Scientists accept the whole of the command of the master Christian, Christ Jesus: "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." They are humbly striving to be worthy of the name "Christian" in its fullest meaning by being obedient to this command. In following the Master, in so far as they understand his teachings, they prefer to be judged by the measure in which their religion is bringing comfort to the sorrowing, health and joy to the sick, and redemption to the sinner, as evidence of the fact that "the kingdom of heaven is at hand;" for Christ Jesus has said that "the kingdom of God is within you."
