Fourteen years ago Christian Science gave me an understanding...
Fourteen years ago Christian Science gave me an understanding of God, in whom "we live, and move, and have our being," and a workable religion based on the truth that, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 494 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." This truth came to me at a time when I seemed to be "without God in the world," since I could not reconcile the orthodox religious training of my childhood with so-called higher education. I had unsuccessfully searched for God among religions, ancient and modern; had studied philosophy at a state university, and had earnestly investigated various schools of thought centering in modern psychology and kindred subjects. My experience illustrates the statement in Science and Health (p. 234), "The present codes of human systems disappoint the weary searcher after a divine theology, adequate to the right education of human thought."
A severe spinal injury, which physicians said might permanently incapacitate me, caused a physical and vocational breakdown. It also helped to break down my false intellectural reserve, disturb my physical prowess and complacency, and weaken my vocational confidence. False pride made way for humility, and the Master's promise of the "kingdom" followed when I became more as a little child. The study of Christian Science was taken up systematically and thoroughly, with the confidence expressed in the first sentence of the Preface to Science and Health, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." My study soon convinced me that I had found the truth I had long been seeking—God, in whose light "shall we see light," and "who healeth all thy diseases." Christian Science satisfied me. It made God real; it met every test of logic; it overcame the ill effects of an accident and cured a chronic stomach complaint. Among other ills that have been healed through the years are an abscessed ear, influenza, lame back, and hoarseness. In our family of four children there have been healings of measles, mumps, earache, bronchitis, nausea, and there has also been a case of mental surgery.
Through Christian Science I have found harmonious companionshipl and a happy home life. Not only has our every need been met through the practice of its teachings, but growth and progress in every direction have been evidenced, bringing great happiness and that fullness of true life promised by Jesus and foretold in Jeremiah, where we read, "Behold ... I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth."
