Through many healings experienced in Christian Science...
Through many healings experienced in Christian Science I have had ample proof that the spiritual laws revealed by both the works and the immortal words of Christ Jesus are as operative to-day as in his time. These healings have also proved to me that the laws whereby Christ Jesus healed are fully revealed, and may be learned and demonstrated through the faithful study and application of Christian Science. In the words, "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," he reveals the action each individual must take to allow these laws to operate. Christian Science is the truth about God and His Christ, and to know this truth makes us free from all discordant conditions. Bringing this modern age to the very feet of Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, voices this same divine law in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 261). She writes, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."
During a healing of inflammatory rheumatism, which I experienced about four years ago, I was privileged to see demonstrated many of the truths taught in Christian Science. I was stricken with this disease following a prolonged period of worry and mental disturbance. A practitioner was engaged, and Christian Science treatment was begun the first day of the illness. A Christian Science nurse was also engaged, as I was unable to move hand or foot. The nurse understood how to lift a patient easily, so I was assisted into a chair each morning in order to study Science and Health in an upright position. On the second day of the illness the practitioner asked my cooperation in wiping out two of the errors in my thought, namely, resentment and self-will. I explained that I felt no resentment myself I was sure, but a friend felt resentful towards me, and I condemned myself for having hurt this friend needlessly. The practitioner replied. "But think what the word 'resentment' means." It was explained, that I was just as much breaking a divine law if in my thinking I accused someone else of harboring resentment, as if I felt resentful myself. I thought immediately of the spiritual law Christ Jesus gives us in Matthew: "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
Through this immediate discernment of the mesmerism of resentment and its uncovering in thought, together with the application of the truth, much of the burden I was carrying was lifted. The error of self-will, however, gave way more slowly, though some of the human impulse to rule gave way before the practitioner's repeated urging that I consider the word "let." "It is just a little word, this word 'let,'" the practitioner remarked, "but when coupled with the word 'God,' it gains greatly. Let God's will be done. Let God's good appear. Let God govern." I did try to put into action, in my thinking, this "let" used together with "God"; and as I did so a new peace came to me.
