"Righteous rebellion"
How common has been the belief that sickness has oftentimes been sent by God! People whose lives have been honorable, moral, wholesome, have believed that fallacy; and their doing so has tended to make disease more real to them, more a part of their earthly experience, and more difficult to heal. Assume that God sends disease upon mankind, or that He permits it to occur, and a stubborn argument is presented for its existence and continuance.
But the belief that disease is sent by God, or has His permission, is based on an altogether unsound premise, namely, that evil is real. Christian Science teaches that God is infinite good; hence that good alone is real. Therefore, it declares that what is called evil cannot have a real existence; and the term evil includes disease in its every form—sorrow, sin, all inharmony. And Christian Science shows that being a false concept of the so-called human mind, without real existence, evil is destroyed by the truth. Understanding the allness of God, good, and the unreality of evil, Mrs. Eddy could write, under the caption, "Righteous rebellion," on page 391 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them. Banish the belief that you can possibly entertain a single intruding pain which cannot be ruled out by the might of Mind, and in this way you can prevent the development of pain in the body. No law of God hinders this result."
When, then, one sick or diseased approaches Christian Science for healing, he must be prepared to relinquish his erroneous beliefs about God. He must acknowledge God's unlimited goodness and love, and gain an understanding of the perfect spiritual law of God, which renders His goodness and love at all times available. He must learn that that which seems to be afflicting him never was caused by God; that it has no real cause, and has therefore nothing in Truth to support it. Let these facts be clearly discerned, and the mental support which he is giving to the disease will be undermined; and, proportionably, the trouble will disappear.
