De Locomotief
Referring to a recent article in De Locomotief in which a doctor, under the heading of "Quackery ... also in psychological spheres," places Christian Science with "laying on of hands," clairvoyance, somnambulism, hypnotism, clay treatment, et cetera, may I request you kindly to put the following correction in your much read paper? For the sake of getting at a right understanding of the word "quackery" it would be well to quote from Van Dale's big dictionary of the Dutch language: "1. QUACK: one who uses unprofitable means to heal any kind of disease, or who pretends to know remedies to ward off all kinds of diseases, or who offers these medicines for sale with much ado; 2. One who imposes upon the public, a cheat, a swindler." A Christian Scientist is one who practices Christian Science, the doctrine which Jesus taught and practiced more than nineteen centuries ago and recommended to his followers. In the tenth chapter of Matthew we read the commandment given to all Christians: "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." Christian Science is not an invention; neither is it a formulated theory; but it is a discovery, namely, the rediscovered, pure doctrine of Jesus the Christ, just as this great Teacher gave it to humanity for the salvation of sin, sickness, and death. This teaching was not meant for his contemporaries and followers only, but for all mankind through all eternity, because Jesus said, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
And what was it that Jesus based his doctrine on? Solely on the Science of God, Life. He said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." To know God, omnipresent, omnipotent, infinite Mind, as the one and only cause, and to know that "beside me there is no God," is the basis on which Jesus demonstrated that God created man in His image and likeness, therefore in the likeness of Spirit, spiritual, and as an idea of Mind, like this Mind, perfect, unchangeable, and eternal. Jesus, who fully understood this Christ-ideal, fully demonstrated this by conquering death and the grave through love for God and mankind. We, therefore, as Christians, cannot pay him greater tribute than by following in his footsteps. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has followed this divine way and has understood and demonstrated the truth in her own life.
After the discovery of God as infinite Mind and creation as its infinite reflection,—the discovery of what heals mankind of sin, sickness, and death,—Mrs. Eddy gave in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," this revelation that came to her as the Comforter which Jesus promised should come. In this textbook of Christian Science the entire Science has been explained so logically and practically that thousands of authenticated testimonies have been given by people who have been healed through the earnest and thorough study of this textbook, and in many cases of so-called incurable diseases. Mrs. Eddy herself established the first Christian Science church, which was based on the Bible and this textbook.
