On pages 149 and 150 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," Mrs. Eddy says: "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." Many times these words have come to me with comfort and reassurance since I took up the study of Christian Science.
I was born of English parentage on my father's side. In our home Sunday was a holy day, and prayer was made on bended knee. When I first heard of Christian Science, though I knew nothing about it, I criticized it. Later, when I made a visit to my husband's mother, who was interested in Christian Science, prejudice was destroyed; for I saw she had something which I had not, the true spirit of Christianity. Some time afterward, at the birth of our twin children, I was so much in need of help that I reached out with all my heart to find the Christ. My first healing for myself and our babies was of constipation. I called on a practitioner for treatment. On the third day, when so far there had been no visible result, knowing that no material means could be used, I was consumed with fear. But I realized my position, and it was then I heard the "still small voice" of Truth in Bible language, as "a very present help in trouble": "Wait, I say, on the Lord." Fear was destroyed, and the healing was immediate.
I was later healed of blood poisoning in one of my fingers caused by the cut of a broken dish. The arm was inflamed above the elbow when I called on a practitioner for help. This was on a Friday. The pain was almost unbearable when on Sunday morning I attempted to read the Lesson-Sermon. When I came to the fourth section, a statement of Truth was so clear that the pain was arrested, and from that time the healing began. It was slow; but as I look back I know it was an urge to deeper study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and Mrs. Eddy's other writings. I began to do my own work and to help others. A family of nine were taken through a period of quarantine because of smallpox in two weeks. The puncture of an artery caused by a fall on something sharp, when a son was skiing, was healed instantaneously. False beliefs of many kinds have been overcome. Grief over the loss of a son, the sense of separation when another son was sent to France and Germany at the beginning of the war, were met through faithful reliance on Christian Science. For twenty-three years we have had no other help, and we are a united family in Science.
