In your recent issue there appears a letter signed "Onlooker," in which Christian Science is classified as "neither Christianity nor Science, but just sheer downright nonsense." This statement could be made only by one who does not understand the teaching and practice of Christian Science. It requires spiritual understanding to comprehend the least part of its teaching. For instance, it is evident that our critic has not discerned the difference between the temporal and the eternal, the finite and the infinite, the material and the spiritual. He quotes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 113), "There is no pain in Truth, and no truth in pain," in proof of his statements. But Truth is God, and it should therefore be plain to everybody that there can be no pain in God. Again (ibid.), "no nerve in Mind, and no mind in nerve." Mind is God, and God is not a corporeal being composed of blood, bones, nerves, and so on. Mrs. Eddy's logic is irrefutable.

Our critic acknowledges that he has judged Christian Science with the material senses; but let him gain spiritual understanding and he will perceive why millions throughout the world are studying the subject and are able, in an ever increasing degree, to heal the sick and reform the sinner through its teachings. He is quite mistaken in thinking that the "almighty dollar" has anything to do with the spread of Christian Science. Its spread is due to the thousands who are daily being healed of disease and suffering, of vice and sensuality, of sorrow and depression, and are being transformed into healthy, happy, and worthy citizens.
