Stepping-Stones

"Humility is the stepping-stone to a higher recognition of Deity."—Miscellaneous Writings. by Mary Baker Eddy, page 1.

Oh, Lord, my heart is full of fears;
I cannot face the foe;
Forebodings dark and bitter tears
Have turned my joy to woe.
My child, I am thy fortress strong;
Look upward to the light;
Turn all your sighing into song;
There is no foe to fight!
I left my path for Him to show;
I sang His praise all day.
The enemy I dreaded so
Had vanished quite away!

Oh, Lord, my work seems hard to do;
My efforts naught avail;
The mists are hiding what is true.
Why is it that I fail?
My child, thy work's to do My will;
Thy striving rich must be;
To know My wisdom's with thee still
Will help thee to be free.
I turned my thought to things above,
His allness to reflect;
I found my peace in His dear love—
So wondrous the effect!

Oh, Lord, I wish I could forgive
The wrong that's done to me;
Resentment and self-pity live
Where love alone should be.
My child, art thou not My idea?
Thy neighbor is the same;
And Love's ideas can never mar
The glory of My name.
The light of Love within me shone,
I took my neighbor's hand,
And all the bitterness had gone,
Obeying Love's command.

Oh, Lord, I have to overcome
So many faults each day;
Yet when I wander far from home,
Thou art my guide and stay.
My child, thy nature's like Mine own;
Each proving that thou hast
But makes this truth the better known—
The good alone can last.
I saw then that the load had gone,
Humility had giv'n
Each vict'ry as a stepping-stone
To bring me nearer heaven!
