There Is No Night

"Even the night shall be light about me."—Psalm 139.

We close our eyes to Truth,
And turn away, forsooth,
Lest we may see
Truth's pure, enduring light
Dispel earth's dreamy night,
And rest in Thee.

And oh! how dark our day,
Without that glad'ning ray,
Which Thou dost shed!
And day seems night,
Without Thy light,
As we are led.

Like children, we begin
To see the light within
Thy blessed Word;
We take Thy loving hand,
And try to understand
What we have heard.

Then night glows bright with stars,
And all our prison bars
Soon melt away;
Truth opens our blind eyes,
And proves, to our surprise,
That all is day.

Oh, keep us near Thy side,
And whatsoe'er betide,
We'll trust in Thee,
Knowing there is no night,
But all is fadeless light,
Throughout eternity.
