Loyalty to God

If one is to express loyalty to God, he must understand something of what God is. For ages men have endeavored to be allegiant to Him, but because of differing opinions in regard to His nature, how often has this very allegiance resulted in bitterest strife among brethren! The mistaken belief that men have no right to understand God, indeed that it is sacrilegious even to attempt to gain such an understanding, is largely responsible for the variance as to what constitutes loyalty to Him.

Jesus, on the contrary, taught that to know God was the prime essential in all Christian effort. While the Christian world has been ready enough to acknowledge that Jesus understood the Father, it appears largely to have forgotten that he always emphasized the fact that God was not only his Father but our Father, and that it was as much our privilege as his to understand and know God. Jesus showed forth the marvelous nature of God. Understanding this nature and being loyal to it enabled him to prove that the child of God always reflects the divine power and presence.

When Christian Science uses the terms "Mind" and "good" to define God, it immediately opens the door to the correct understanding of Him. It goes without saying that Mind must be known by its thoughts. Consequently, since God is divine Mind and God is good, Mind's thoughts must be good; and it is therefore through the good thoughts of divine Mind that we come to know God. All good thoughts, then, originate in divine Mind, and belong to Mind, since Mind, God, is infinite. This shows clearly that man made in God's likeness must have the God-given ability to think the good thoughts which God, divine Mind, gives him. This is very simple logic; and it makes the way plain to the proving of man's unity with God, which Jesus demonstrated perfectly.
