I am sure you will allow me to state that Christian Science...

I am sure you will allow me to state that Christian Science is, as the name given to it by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, signifies, entirely and simply "Christian" Science. Its success is to-day responsible for the great interest in spiritual healing which is stirring the hearts of multitudes of people. It is causing men and women to ask how and why the church lost the power to heal, which it certainly had for the first three centuries of the Christian era. They know that students of the Bible who also study the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," are being healed of so-called incurable illnesses through the understanding of God which they acquire, and that they can also bring healing to others through the enlightenment which they gain. There is no secret about it. The way is clear and plain, straight and narrow, open to all who care to walk in it. It is the same way that Jesus trod, the same along which the apostles followed him, the way that Isaiah foresaw, where "the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err." It is indeed true that the materialism of the age demands for its cure a return to simpler and purer ideals; and those who desire a more spiritual and practical Christianity turn gladly to Christian Science for salvation from sickness, pain, and anxiety, as well as for salvation from sin. What the sufferer needs is a present help in trouble; and the large congregations which fill the Christian Science churches every Sunday and every Wednesday evening bear witness to the power which Christianity has to help, when scientifically and intelligently understood and applied.

Why should it seem a thing incredible that the discovery should have come through the pure heart of a spiritually minded woman? There are those who will sacrifice themselves in countless ways for those they love: and Mrs. Eddy did all this and more, because of her great love for God and man. She worked on with marvelous humility and courage until she had established the organization of the Church of Christ, Scientist, whose mission is to reinstate the lost element of Christ-healing. Why should we wonder that the vision of the healing Christ was first perceived in our day by a woman? This woman, like Mary Magdalene, at once went to share the new-found knowledge with those who had loved the Master. She, also, was met at first with incredulity, and her good news seemed "but idle tales." Afterwards, the truth of her words was amply demonstrated; and to-day, multitudes, restored to health and to lives of usefulness and goodness, are grateful to God for the definition of Him which Christian Science gives (Science and Health, p. 587): "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."
