A year or two ago an authorized lecturer on Christian Science...
A year or two ago an authorized lecturer on Christian Science said something to this effect: When you experience your first healing through your own unaided understanding of Christian Science, at that moment you begin to be a Christian Scientist. I clearly recall the moment when I experienced this. I had been reading the Bible Lessons for some months, and had experienced several healings of colds and minor complaints, but aided by the work of a Christian Science practitioner. Then the time came for me to test my own unfolding understanding. As I took a pan of cake out of the oven, one day, the back of my hand struck the hot inner tray of the oven. For just an instant there was great pain; and then the thought came to me that matter could feel no pain, for there was no pain and there was in reality no matter. The healing was instantaneous.
Quite a number of years after that experience, the recollection of it enabled me instantaneously to heal our little boy of a burn which seemed much more severe. It was a bitter, cold day in winter—one of the heatless Mondays we had in Detroit during the war. The maid was doing the laundry, so I was in the kitchen preparing lunch. A friend of mine was expected to lunch with us. Our little boy, aged three years, who was running around, stumbled and fell against an oil stove, which I had lighted to help warm up the kitchen, striking the red-hot top of the stove with the back of one hand. He screamed with pain; but I took him in my arms, and with a grateful realization that the same truth which had healed me would certainly heal the child, I audibly declared the truth to him. He stopped crying at once, and although, during the lunch which followed. he occasionally whispered to me, "Will you work for me, Mother?" there was little further trouble; and the friend, who had arrived a few minutes after the accident, had no idea that anything serious had occurred. The skin had been burnt off the whole back of his hand; but afterwards I found him sailing boats in the washbasin with both hands in the water.
These are just two of the many proofs I have had of the power of Christian Science to heal; and I am more grateful than mere words can express for its wonderful revelation. I use this truth every day, in all my problems, large and small; and it is gradually teaching me how to obey the command, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
