Weekly Post
A contributor to your paper makes a very common mistake concerning the Christian Science teaching that there is no matter, if he takes this to mean that there is nothing at all, or that the material world is just a picture of the human imagination. Christian Science teaches that what appears to be material is but a false sense of spiritual reality. And it goes wholly with him when he says, "There is but one substance in the universe," but parts company when he goes on to say, "And matter and spirit are kindred manifestations of it." Christian Science declares that Spirit is the one infinite substance and that matter is the suppositional opposite of Spirit. It also shows that the material sense of substance and Life, by introducing the false beliefs of limitation, transitoriness, corruption, and decay, is the source of all fear, greed, passion, strife, hate, and envy; and these surely are not good! On page 306 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "The myriad forms of mortal thought, made manifest as matter, are not more distinct nor real to the material senses than are the Soul-created forms to spiritual sense, which cognizes Life as permanent." On this basis Christian Science is demonstrating the unreality of matter and evil.
