It is just eight years since I began to study Christian Science, when I was enjoying a holiday in London. I returned to Italy soon after the war broke out; and, though usually a bad traveler, I had a most comfortable journey, in spite of the difficulties of passing through France at such a time, and having to spend five days on the journey to Florence. In 1915, I had the joy of being accepted as a member of The Mother Church; and this was a great encouragement in the search for Truth, and gave me a great mental uplift. I had many splendid experiences, for which I was and am very grateful. Three special cases I should like to mention particularly. The first was the birth of our little girl. I was helped by a very dear Christian Science friend, who worked for me in Science so lovingly that all was most harmonious. When the baby was one year old, she fell down a flight of marble stairs. I was alone in the house, and fear gripped me like a vice. I tremblingly repeated the "scientific statement of being" as given on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Lord's Prayer, and anything else from the Bible or Mrs. Eddy's writings I could remember, although I seemed to have difficulty in doing so. All the time I was walking up and down with the screaming child in my arms; and I scarcely dared to look at her. Then I began to sing one of Mrs. Eddy's hymns; after which the child stopped crying and fell asleep. Then I put her carefully on her bed, and took the Bible and Science and Health and read steadily, until I felt reassured and knew that "accidents are unknown to God" (Science and Health, p. 424), and that the darling baby was quite well. Then I prepared supper; and when my husband returned home I was able to tell him what had happened, and assure him that there would be no ill effects. Soon afterward she woke up, and was just as bright and happy as ever. The child is now nearly three years old, and has never tasted medicine.
Two years ago, we were all attacked by a contagious ailment. We immediately wrote to a Christian Science practitioner in Florence; and through her loving and faithful work we were soon freed of all signs of the nauseous trouble.
With my heart full of gratitude for all those who have helped us with so much love and patience, and with the deepest and truest thanks to God and Mrs. Eddy, I offer this testimony of what Christian Science has been and is to me.—(Mrs.) Marguerite Giovannelli, Genoa, Italy.
