Christian Science has meant everything to me
Christian Science has meant everything to me. It has given me life, not only in a spiritual sense, but in a literal sense as well. About ten years ago, while I was suffering great pain and taking doses of morphine at regular intervals, a dear neighbor of ours who had been healed in Christian Science, sent a practitioner over to our house to give me a treatment. As soon as she seated herself by the bed and started with the treatment, I felt a great sense of peace and fell into a natural sleep; but when I awoke I shut the door on Truth by demanding more morphine, in spite of the fact that I was then free from pain.
If I had heeded this proof, how much suffering I would have been spared! Instead, I went blindly on in the dream of material living, and for years dragged out a weary existence of continuous suffering. I again tried Christian Science treatment for the trouble and in a short time all the symptoms disappeared, so I stopped treatment; but two years later I again failed to do as Mrs. Eddy says on page 392 of Science and Health, "Stand porter at the door of thought." Resentment, grief, and fear entered my mental abode, with the result that the trouble returned in much worse form.
My mother, having been a practicing physician, decided that she would not trust such a serious (so named by medical law) disease to Christian Science treatment, so two competent physicians were called, who treated me for two days.
The doctors said I was dying and that the end was near. Then my family saw the powerlessness of material systems, and when to mortal sense it was almost too late, they decided to "trust in Truth, and have no other trusts" (Miscellany, p. 171). When we put our trust in God, I began to get well.
To faulty human sense the treatment given me years ago would have been called wasted, but in that one treatment the seed of Truth was sown, and years later in my great extremity I turned to Christian Science, which restored me to my family. This is very plain proof to me that no Christian Science treatment is ever wasted.
While my healing has seemed slow, it has made me study and think more. I am grateful for the physical healing, but this is the very least part of the great transformation. The pure light that has been revealed to me is the real blessing. We are grateful for the persistent courage of the faithful practitioner, and to God for revealing the truth to this age through the pure consciousness of Mary Baker Eddy. I shall never cease to be grateful to her for her wonderful work for mankind. I can only prove my deep gratitude by striving to walk in her footsteps. I greatly appreciate all of the authorized Christian Science literature, including The Christian Science Monitor. It brings the world to me.
(Miss) Marie Buchanan, Sawtelle, Calif.
I wish to add a few words to my daughter's testimony. Being a graduate of a recognized medical college, I can verity all she says in regard to the verdict of the doctors. I am very grateful for her healing, also for instantaneous relief from lumbago. Help has been received in many ways, and we thank God for Christian Science.
(Mrs.) Jennie N. Buchanan.
